Struvite Problem
When looking at photographs of struvite filled piping, clogged valves and screens, and covered surfaces, it always leads to the question, “How do you remove struvite without causing a major interruption?” Struvite precipitation and formation in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO), Food Processing, and many other industries that have wastewater with Magnesium, Ammonia, and Phosphate.
One of the easiest ways to stay on top of a struvite or vivianite problem is to utilize the plant data that you are collecting. Tell signs of struvite formation can include flow changes due to restrictions in lines, pumps and screens, and heat transfer in heat exchangers and anaerobic digesters.
A WWTP had a 14’’ diameter transfer line and noticed it took 45 minutes to transfer sludge when it should have taken 4 minutes. Upon discovering struvite, they hydro-jetted the line which can leave potential growth sites, or if they used a grinder, would have much downtime in both situations. Other options for removal have included using acids which can lead to other issues.
Replacing Equipment, Grinding or Hydro-jetting:
- A lot of downtime
- Labor intensive (High costs!)
- If any struvite remains will grow and accumulate much faster
Using Hydrochloric Acid to remove struvite or vivianite scale:
- Highly corrosive
- Highly Hazardous
- Leads to damaged equipment
